Toward Intra-Operative Prostate Photoacoustic Imaging: Configuration Evaluation and Implementation Using the da Vinci Research Kit

Abstract: We compare different possible scanning geometries for prostate photoacoustic tomography (PAT) while considering a realistic reconstruction scenario in which the limited-view of the prostate and the directivity effect of the transducer are taken into account. Simulations and experiments confirm that an intra-operative configuration in which the photoacoustic signal is received by a pick-up transducer from the anterior surface of the prostate provides the best approach. We propose a PAT acquisition system that i… Show more

“…The intelligence of medical equipment has been fundamentally improved in the post decades . Actually, researchers in this area have already developed several integrated or intelligent medical system, some of them like da Vinci and Robodoc are even commercially available on market. Although we cannot directly compare these three systems in error performance since they target on different types of surgery and have different evaluation standards for surgical results.…”

“…incontinence and impotence). A recent study was conducted to determine the best scanning geometry for intraoperative PA prostate imaging 94. It was demonstrated through simulation and experiment (using phantoms) that a convex, “pick-up” transducer (28 mm width, 10 MHz) controlled by a da Vinci robot was a promising approach for prostate imaging.…”

“…For 3D imaging, 3-4 rotation angles of the probe may be required in order to cover the full volume of the prostate. For receiving the PA signal, a scheme to image prostate in 3D by using a da Vinci robot to control the scanning of a linear transducer has been reported [43].…”
