Toward Open Network Data Exchange Protocols for Construction Metrology and Automation: Liveview

Abstract: A significant problem in construction automation is the difficulty of interfacing and integrating subsystems (e.g. sensors, databases, visualization systems) into a useful whole. In this paper, we describe our past and present efforts toward the design and implementation of network protocols to address this problem. Our current design effort concentrates on communicating, "who, what, where, and when" data over internet-protocol (IP) networks, and is based on the IEEE 1278 (distributed interactive simulation) p… Show more

“…With the use of data standards, the construction industry has started sharing information more efficiently (Pfeffer and Latimer, 1999;Liu et al, 2000;Jardim-Gonçalves et al, 2000). Extensible markup language (XML) allows data from legacy systems and applications to be sent via the Internet to other companies' systems without complex or expensive data conversion (Lin and Tserng, 2001).…”

“…The entire web-based user interface runs through an Internet Explorer 4.1 graphical user interface written in Microsoft FrontPage98, driven by VisualBasic Scripts. Active Server Pages interact with the project database, and a LiveView [5] Common Gateway Interfaces (CGI) script provides the protocol for the transmission of both the part ID and its coordinates to the part locator service for position and orientation determination.…”
