Toward rigorous use of expert knowledge in ecological research

Abstract: Abstract. Practicing ecologists who excel at their work (''experts'') hold a wealth of knowledge. This knowledge offers a wide range of opportunities for application in ecological research and natural resource decision-making. While experts are often consulted ad-hoc, their contributions are not widely acknowledged. These informal applications of expert knowledge lead to concerns about a lack of transparency and repeatability, causing distrust of this knowledge source in the scientific community. Here, we addr… Show more

“…Peer review approaches do not quantitatively address contradicting evidence or differences in expert opinions. Risk assessment for invasive alien species listing has not kept up with recent progress in the field of expert elicitation in support of environmental decision making (Martin et al 2012;Drescher et al 2013;Morgan 2014;Sutherland and Burgman 2015). To overcome this, we suggest a second approach including a method of consensus building (Fig.…”

“…With the emergence of forestry concepts such as ecosystembased management , the production of studies and reports that aim to identify potential ecological or management issues has increased worldwide (Drescher et al 2013). The ecosystem management paradigm emerged about 25 years ago and is characterized, among other things, by being adaptive as well as capable of integrating human values, considering humans to be a part of nature (Grumbine 1994).…”

“…Even though expert knowledge is sometimes considered as a weak source of information, when data necessary to address issues are lacking, as is often the case in natural resources management, the use of expert knowledge can be an efficient and valuable scientific approach (Oliver 2002, Cardinall 2004, Drescher et al 2013. Expert knowledge can be qualitative, quantitative and can complement empirical data Bobeva 2005, Drescher et al 2013).…”
