Toward the First Ultracold-Neutron Production at TRIUMF

Abstract: The TUCAN collaboration is currently setting up the first ultracold-neutron (UCN) source of its kind in Canada. It combines a neutron-spallation-driven source with a heavy-water primary moderator, along with a superfluid-helium UCN converter. Thanks to the expertise accumulated during the development of the source at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP, Osaka University), a UCN density of 26 UCN/cm 3 at 90 neV critical energy was achieved in Japan.
