Towards a contemporary player learning in development framework for sports practitioners

Abstract: As it is appreciated that learning is a non-linear process – implying that coaching methodologies in sport should be accommodative – it is reasonable to suggest that player development pathways should also account for this non-linearity. A constraints-led approach (CLA), predicated on the theory of ecological dynamics, has been suggested as a viable framework for capturing the non-linearity of learning, development and performance in sport. The CLA articulates how skills emerge through the interaction of diffe… Show more

“…One study identifies frustration felt by novice analysts when coaches viewed them primarily as whizz kids with computers and did not recognise their potential to contribute pedagogically as coaching graduates (McKenna et al, 2018). Coaching literature increasingly highlights the importance of athlete empowerment and of feedback and feed-forward in accelerating learning (Richards et al, 2017;O'Sullivan et al, 2021), illustrating the alignment between the two schools of thought.…”

“…Depending on the practitioner’s objective for the activity, the identified change point may then serve as a potential “cut-off” point for facilitating exploratory player behaviour or a “minimum duration” required to provide adequate time for players to attune to their environment. Thus the change point can serve to analyse acute changes in the learning process to inform training design however, these should be considered within the longer time-scales of the learning process, such as weeks and months [ 31 ].…”

“…These results seem to indicate that the number of players per team as a task constraint can influence players and teams’ possibilities for action, and consequently their tactical behaviour. One of the first constraints that coaches need to consider when designing the practice tasks is the number of players involved [ 34 ]. When the goal is to create passing lines and maintain ball possession through passing, the 3vs3 SSCG should be used whereas if the focus is on dribbling and shooting, the 2vs2 situation can ensure a greater number of these actions.…”
