Towards a distinctive body of knowledge for Information Systems experts: coding ISD process knowledge in two IS journals

Abstract: This paper introduces the idea of coding a practically relevant body of knowledge (BoK) in Information Systems (IS) that could have major benefits for the field. In its main part, the paper focuses on the question if and how an underlying body of action-oriented knowledge for IS experts could be distilled from the IS research literature. For this purpose the paper identifies five knowledge areas as the most important parts for an IS expert's BoK. Two of these are claimed as distinct areas of competence for IS… Show more

“…They identify a number of disconnects between various aspects of IS research and outline a new body of knowledge in IS development (Iivari, Hirschheim, & Klein, 2004). They suggest there are five knowledge areas in ISD: technical knowledge, application domain (i.e., business function) knowledge, organisational knowledge, application knowledge, and ISD process knowledge.…”

Their work was partly motivated by a widely discussed paper by Benbasat and Zmud (2003) on the identity crisis in the IS discipline.…”

“…Two critical considerations stem from this definition: a) research must enhance the scientific community's current understanding of a phenomenon, or contribute to enhance the BoK, and b) research must communicate what was discovered in the new study to the scientific community. Knowing the current status of the BoK in the given research field is an essential first step for any research project (Iivari et al, 2004). An effective literature review accomplishes this step by: The next three sub-sections address the importance of the literature review for quality IS research.…”
