Towards a predictive simulation of brace action in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract: Bracing is the most common treatment to stop the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Finite element modeling could help improve brace design, but model validation is still a challenge. In this work, the clinical relevance of a predictive and subject-specific model for bracing was evaluated in forty-six AIS patients. The model reproduces brace action and the patient's spinopelvic adjustments to keep balance. The model simulated 70% or more patients with geometrical parameters within a preselected to… Show more

“…25,26 Other initiatives have used similar tools to theoretically predict correction and study brace biomechanics. 27,28 Clin et al 29 used a preliminary version of the FEM utilized in this study to compare 15 brace design features and passive correction mechanisms using a design of experiment approach. Features such as the position of brace opening, strap tension, pelvic extension side, lordosis design, and rigid shell shape were found to be the most influential on the simulated 3D correction.…”

“…[30,31] There are also other emerging research interests, such as a new 3-dimensional classification of AIS, [32] the validation of some new classifications, [33,34] assessment methods, and finite element models of the scoliotic spine. [35][36][37][38] Table 3 Authors with publications ≥ 15 and with citations ≥ 100. Besides, based on analysis of co-cited references, the article entitled "Effects of bracing in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis" contributed by Weinstein in 2013, has been cited the most times.…”

“…FE models of the trunk have been coupled to brace models and patient geometry for personalized brace design in the context of AIS ( Gignac et al, 2000 ; Liao et al, 2007 ; Nie et al, 2009 ). Some studies include the evaluation of the effectiveness of these techniques on large cohorts of patients ( Cobetto et al, 2017 ; Vergari et al, 2020 ; Guy et al, 2021 ).…”
