Towards a Protocol for the Collection of VGI Vector Data

Abstract: Abstract:A protocol for the collection of vector data in Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) projects is proposed. VGI is a source of crowdsourced geographic data and information which is comparable, and in some cases better, than equivalent data from National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) and Commercial Surveying Companies (CSC). However, there are many differences in how NMAs and CSC collect, analyse, manage and distribute geographic information to that of VGI projects. NMAs and CSC make use of robust and sta… Show more

“…In 2016, Mooney et al published what they believe to be the "first protocol for VGI vector data collection" for crowdsourced geospatial data. While not tied to a particular VGI project, the creation of protocol suggests future projects may be able to make more effective use of crowdsourced data (Mooney et al 2016). As crowdsourcing becomes more prevalent, bestpractices for its use are actively being developed.…”

“…Alternatively, senior students could validate data contributed by junior students, in the way it is done at Texas Tech. In contrast to the a-posteriori quality check, some recent developments in literature stress the need to introduce data collection protocols to guide contributors a-priori in producing data of the highest possible quality (Mooney et al, 2016). This is accomplished in the field of humanitarian mapping through the multitude of training materials and guidelines, see e.g.…”

“…3.4), so that the end-users can be more confident to include crowdsourced geographic information in their decision-making process because the validity and the accuracy of the collectors will be improved (Cohn 2008). Mooney et al (2016) developed a generic protocol for VGI vector data collection that can increase the quality of VGI and thus the fitness-for-purpose for either a specific VGI project or a future one, and can guide new or experienced users. Minghini et al (2017) then applied this protocol to real-world applications (one for VGI vector data and one for geotagged photographs).…”
