Towards a Service-Oriented Architecture for Interconnecting Medical Devices and Applications

Abstract: A technical concept has been developed which employs a service-oriented architecture (SOA) as an IT platform and ecosystem to handle different modalities, devices, and data streams in the OR. A SOA ecosystem is deployed to interconnect modalities of an anesthesia workplace and an endoscopic surgery workplace with a hospital information system. The integration of the anesthesia cockpit into a SOA based network is achieved with a disparate Web Application Server. This server physically connects to the data ports… Show more

“…The centralized approach utilizes an enterprise service bus (ESB) to provide a common data-centric middleware structure for reliable transport and traceability of synchronous and asynchronous messages [19]. The distributed approach does not depend on a central structure, but more on standards from the Web service domain.…”

“…SOA is really about designing and building systems using heterogeneous network addressable software components in the form of Services (Lee et al, 2006). It is an architecture comprising components and interconnections that stress interoperability and location transparency (Strahle et al, 2007).…”

“…Thus, high level programming languages can be used and several devices can be managed by one server. This way of integrating devices was chosen in [23] by using web service technologies.…”

“…The research gap we address in this paper is the lack of generalized design concepts for SODA. Presented architectures in existing works are based on the specific requirements of the given scenarios (e.g., [23]) or are too abstract for resolving general SODA design problems (e.g., [5]). …”
