Towards a uniform color space: A better formula to describe the munsell and OSA color scales

Abstract: An improved quantitative description of the equidistant color and lightness spacing of the Munsell and OSA‐UCS Systems is presented. The basic idea is to apply physiologically acceptable hyperbolic response functions to relate light absorption in and the excitation of the three cone types with visual response. A similar nonlinear equation describes the relationship between the luminance factor Y and a lightness magnitude. Subsequent linear combinations of the nonlinear functions describe opponent‐color transfo… Show more

“…A uniform color space, widely used in industry, is the CIE-L * a * b * , which allows one to visualize the color solid in a more realistic way. At present, newer and more perceptually uniform color spaces, such as SVF, 11 DIN99d, 12 and CIECAM02, 13 are available, so we are going to plot the color solid in these color spaces and analyze it with profiles of constant lightness and hue angle for several illuminants and light sources.…”

“…The dispersion index of the centers of gravity, e V,e Definitions of all these parameters are given in Appendix A and are similar to other previously used in the literature. 54 In a perfectly uniform space, the circularity indexes, the Chroma and hue spacing indexes, and the dispersion index of the centers of gravity are zero. The lower these values, the more uniform is the space.…”

“…For quantitative comparisons, we have used a set of four parameters. 54 Histograms of the parameters for the Munsell samples with value 3, 5, and 7 calculated with ATTD05 and CIECAM02, under illuminant C, are shown in Figs. F3-F6 3-6.…”

“…Since the system enables prediction of whether two physically different colors will look alike when viewed under the same conditions by an average observer, it has been used effectively for years in a number of industries, such as paint and textile manufacturing, which require precise color measurement and specification. While a number of other systems are available and may be superior in specific instances (Seim and Valberg, 1986), the CIE system is generally considered the most reasonable choice of existing metrics for many applications (Carter and Carter, 1981;Cowan, 1983aCowan, , 1983bRobertson, 1972;Silverstein andMerrifield, 1981, 1985).…”
