Towards Ambient Intelligence For The Domestic Care Of The Elderly

Abstract: In this article we present an integrated system the domestic care of elderly people which is being developed within the RoboCare project. The system is composed of a network of sensors placed in the environment to reconstruct a global situation and a set of robotic and software agents for controlling the environment. Within this framework, the two main components that we describe in this article are: (1) a people and robot localization and tracking system that exploits stereo vision in order to monitor the pos… Show more

“…In this case, there is no analysis of conflictual constraints, as priority values are assigned by the user to the different constraints. In [5,4] the authors use the ISES/ESA algorithm [11] for the scheduling and planning in the architecture of RoboCare. This scheduling technique is also optimized by the use of monitoring of the user's behaviour.…”

“…The system presented in this paper is in use within the RoboCare project [1,16], whose goal is to build a multi-agent system that generates user services for human assistance and develop support technology which can play a role in allowing elderly people to lead an independent lifestyle in their own homes. The RoboCare Domestic Environment (RDE), located at the Institute for Cognitive Science and Technology (CNR, Rome, Italy), is intended to be a testbed environment in which to test the ability of the domotic technology built within the project.…”

“…The previous years have witnessed an increase of applying AmI technologies to enhance users' comfort [60] and to help the elderly and people with disabilities especially those having vision impairment (according to World Health Organization statistics 1 , the estimated number of visually impaired people worldwide is 285 million). Such AmI applications included alerting carers for emergency cases such as falling down [70], using robots to assist the elderly in daily tasks [71] or suggesting safe navigation techniques for the blind via GPS, RFID, etc. [72] [73].…”
