Towards an Ultrasonic Guided Wave Procedure for Health Monitoring of Composite Vessels: Application to Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft

Abstract: This paper presents an overview and description of the approach to be used to investigate the behavior and the defect sensitivity of various ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) modes propagating specifically in composite cylindrical vessels in the framework of the safety of hydrogen energy transportation such as hydrogen-powered aircrafts. These structures which consist of thick and multi-layer composites are envisioned for housing hydrogen gas at high pressures. Due to safety concerns associated with a weakened stru… Show more

“…They are considered to be the energy source of the twenty-first century due to their high power densities, lightweight, low operating temperature (quick start-up), long cycle life, as well as zero pollution [8][9][10]. Therefore, they have been used in many fields such as transportation, aircraft, distributed generation, and especially in stationary and mobile applications [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. In these applications, the PEMFC is usually coupled with a DC-DC power electronic converter that provides an efficient power conversion to the load, and also offers highly regulated output voltage [19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…Hence, scientists and researchers are aspiring to balance these three directions in order to obtain the best solution and optimal results [1]. Fuel cells are an ideal solution that can be used in many engineering fields, including transportation [2][3][4][5], aircraft [6,7] and distributed generation [8][9][10], as well as stationary and mobile applications [11][12][13][14]. One of the most commonly used fuel cells is the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC).…”

“…Many researchers have been exploring an option of monitoring pressure vessels using integrated optical fibres with Bragg grating sensors [16][17][18][19][20]. Another promising approach is guided wave-based monitoring [10,12,13,[21][22][23], which has several advantages when compared to alternative monitoring techniques. One of the advantages is that the approach is non-destructive and another is the approach's holistic character with respect to detection and localisation of damage.…”
