Towards automatic near real-time traffic monitoring with an airborne wide angle camera system

Abstract: Purpose Large area traffic monitoring with high spatial and temporal resolution is a challenge that cannot be served by today available static infrastructure. Therefore, we present an automatic near real-time traffic monitoring approach using data of an airborne digital camera system with a frame rate of up to 3 fps. Methods By performing direct georeferencing on the obtained aerial images with the use of GPS/IMU data we are able to conduct near real-time traffic data extraction. The traffic processor consists… Show more

“…They are defined as: (8) with true positives being the number of vehicles detected, false positives the number of non-vehicle detections and false negatives the number of vehicles missed. In the tracking evaluation, true positives is the number of vehicles tracked correctly, false positives the number of incorrectly tracked vehicles and false negatives the number of vehicles detected, but not tracked (vehicles that are not tracked during image bursts due to occlusion are not counted as false positives).…”

“…Several projects that contribute to area-wide traffic monitoring by remote sensing based on airborne optical and SAR sensors are currently running at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) or have already been concluded (e.g., [6][7][8][9]). Meanwhile, an airborne optical system for traffic monitoring with real-time capability has been developed [10].…”
