Towards better lighting recommendations for open surgery

Abstract: This study assesses the lighting requirements for operating theatres and the lighting conditions in a specific test case and proposes alternate ways of achieving a favourable visual environment. The hypothesis was that an increased illuminance level from general lighting and lower luminance contrasts between the essential task areas affect perceived lighting quality, visual ability and performance, as well as tiredness of medical staff performing surgical work. The investigation consisted of three parts: a lab… Show more

“…People working indoors are usually exposed illuminance levels of 200–500 lx in a combination of natural and electrical light [ 5 ]. The recommended light levels for the surgical environment are 1000 lx as general lighting and 10,000–100,000 lx over the surgical field [ 6 ]. Artificial light has previously been shown to contribute to fatigue and headache, and electrical light can decrease sight [ 5 ].…”

“…More particularly, the acquired videos often suffer from uneven illumination, e.g., poor illumination not only in the peripheral areas of the light spot but also in the weakly illuminated regions due to the relief and texture of the gastrointestinal tissues [3]. Uneven illumination (UI) manifests itself as a non-uniform spatial distribution of light, making cer-tain regions appear more illuminated than others, regardless of the intensity of the incident light beam.…”
