Towards Comparative Measures of Circulation: Insights from Indigenous Australia

Abstract: Circulation and other forms of temporary movement are of rising importance in the context of overall population mobility. Despite this, analysis is constrained by a lack of appropriate data and techniques for developing summary measures. Ethnographic methods have afforded useful insights into the complex space-time circuits and lifetime sequences involved, but without quantitative indicators these forms of mobility are effectively invisible to researchers and policy makers. Building on prior work in developing… Show more

“…The four distinguished types of Ukrainian migrants can be located in the two‐dimensional analytical frame based on frequency and duration dimensions of circulation, as proposed by Taylor and Bell (). However, in contrast to the cited approach, our typology refers to the whole migration projects of migrants and is “sensitive” to the length of experience of migrants.…”

“…The first two variables—frequency of stays and share of time spent in Poland—are classic measures of frequency and duration in internal circulation (Taylor, ; Taylor & Bell, ). However, in our study, we do not calculate these measures in relation to the same fixed period for all migrants, as is usually done in the literature (ibid.).…”

“…Others before us have explored migration on the Gold Coast, drawing attention to data and methodological challenges (Baum, Mullins, Stimson, & O'Connor, 2002;Mullins, 1990Mullins, , 1991Stimson & Minnery, 1998;Stimson, Minnery, Kabamba, & Moon, 1996). Bell and Ward (2000) and Taylor and Bell (2012) argue that the focus of research has been on permanent migration, and there has been little systematic development of data sets or sophisticated research approaches addressing temporary or circular mobility.…”

“…Measures of the balance of movements (Bedford 1973), intensity of circulation (Young 1979) and velocity of circulation (Standing 1982) were also devised to establish the degree of circularity in population mobility. Taylor (1986) extended this work by constructing lifelines tracing patterns of circulation that combined cycles of movement with the duration of time away from home, and later applied this approach to distinguish different forms of mobility among Indigenous Australians by graphically positioning the frequency and duration of moves on an x-y scattergram (Taylor and Bell, 2012).…”

“…Drawing on techniques developed by Taylor and Bell (2012), this study illustrates key aspects of these movement trajectories on an x-y scatter graph. The x axis records the number of completed circuits over a period of one month by members of a selected household.…”
