Towards Fully Automated Tunnel Inspection: A Survey and Future Trends

Abstract: -Tunnels environments are characterized by dust, humidity, and absence of natural light. Artificial and natural impacts, change in load criteria, or the simple effect of ageing, make tunnels require inspection and maintenance. These operations are commonly performed by human workers taking time and expertise without guarantee quality control. Robotic tunnel inspection and maintenance (RTIM) introduces high productivity, quality and repetitiveness. This paper describes the current trends in the subject, and int… Show more

“…For example , at the entrance of a tunnel the ambient light conditions are different than further in the tunnel. The data collected by sensors in these deployments may not provide enough information for a complete assessment of the tunnel condition [9]. Thus, node and operating environment heterogeneity would benefit from decentralized data processing [11].…”

“…The spectrum of existing robotic tunnel inspection systems is very broad, and an up-to-date survey can be found in [1]. As described in [15], tunnel inspections vary in purpose, from routine visual inspections to more detailed, specific inspections.…”

“…The operation and maintenance of ageing civil infrastructure such at tunnels is one of the greatest challenges facing society today [1,2]. Visual inspection, which allows the measurement and assessment of structural health over large spatial areas, is a key component.…”

“…When facing existing civil infrastructures, one of the greatest challenges that engineers may find is its inspection and assessment in order to to ensure that bridges, roads, pipelines and tunnels remain in safe condition and continue to provide reliable levels of service [1], [2]. The structural performance of tunnels is time-dependent because of the damaging process induced by natural and artificial impacts, inadequate maintance or the simple effect of ageing.…”
