Towards global consensus on outcome measures for atopic eczema research: results of the HOME II meeting

Abstract: The use of nonstandardized and inadequately validated outcome measures in atopic eczema trials is a major obstacle to practising evidence-based dermatology. The Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema (HOME) initiative is an international multiprofessional group dedicated to atopic eczema outcomes research. In June 2011, the HOME initiative conducted a consensus study involving 43 individuals from 10 countries, representing different stakeholders (patients, clinicians, methodologists, pharmaceutical industry) … Show more

“…There is still widespread heterogeneity in the choice of outcome measures, rendering any form of meta-analysis very difficult and underscoring the need for core outcome sets for eczema, as are being developed by the HOME initiative. 64,65 There has been a modest improvement in the number of trials reporting participant-assessed outcomes such as itching and sleep loss, but these were almost always secondary outcomes and the results were very often presented with insufficient detail.…”

“…To improve the situation, the HOME initiative was formed. 64,65 This initiative is ongoing and involves and welcomes contributions from researchers, clinicians, patients and the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this initiative is to decide on a set of core outcome measures that should be included in all RCTs.…”

“…The methods used followed agreed standards for consensus development, using guidance outlined by the HOME initiative 296 and the Core Outcome Measures for Effectiveness Trials initiative. 314 In confirming a set of core outcome domains for use in future vitiligo trials, it is hoped that future studies will focus on outcomes that are relevant and important to both patients and HCPs; thus, improving the relevance and interpretability of future research findings.…”

“…Voting took place as one panel; all stakeholders were included in every vote. The previously agreed consensus rule 296 was applied here; that is consensus is reached when < 30% of the voters disagree.…”
