Abstract. This innovative effort focused on advancements in the shoe-making process by introducing a state-of-the-art pneumatic shoe press integrated with a real-time cloud database system tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This research aims to design and engineer a state-of-the-art pneumatic shoe press capable of printing complex designs on leather footwear. This machine can collect, send, and store production data in a cloud-based database, so as to monitor and analyze their manufacturing operations in real-time. The research methodology utilizes a structured approach from the design, manufacturing, assembly, operational testing, performance evaluation, and data analysis stages. The application of a pneumatic shoe press integrated with a real-time cloud database system provides various benefits for SMEs in the footwear industry. The system’s advantage lies in the use of a real-time cloud database that allows SMEs to gain immediate access to production data. The machine is capable of printing complex designs with high precision in one minute per pair of shoes. The product quality is good, so it can meet the standards of the shoe industry. This research successfully developed a pneumatic shoe press integrated with a real-time cloud database system, which can improve the productivity and quality of SMEs in the shoe industry. This technological innovation simplifies the manufacturing process, ensures the best product quality, and provides real-time production data.

The textile sector is one of the industries with the greatest relevance and development of the Peruvian economy, however, currently customers are characterized by being increasingly demanding, which forces organizations to be more flexible to change, these changes have a great impact on small and mediumsized companies as it causes problems of non-fulfillment of orders making service levels very low. It should also be noted that it is these companies that are unaware of the importance of using continuous improvement tools, as well as those that provide little or no training to their staff as a strategy to mitigate the problem. Consequently, a literature review was carried out in order to compile production models of the textile sector to solve the problem of non-fulfillment of orders. The proposed model includes Lean Manufacturing tools, as well as the use of MRP. The present design is focused on the implementation of models executed in other companies without the need for a very large investment, or the use of the most advanced technology of today.

Purpose This paper aims to develop a lean manufacturing road map for industrial firms by selecting the appropriate lean tools relying on the predefined strategic objectives and the firm constraints. It also illustrates how to prioritize these tools considering their interrelationship. Design/methodology/approach Relying on the predefined strategic objectives, operational objectives can be set by using the balanced scorecard (BSC). Afterwards, the theory of constraints (TOC) is introduced to investigate the manufacturing system and to determine its constraints. For these constraints, the principle of fault tree analysis (FTA) is used to determine their root causes. Consequently, lean manufacturing tools/initiatives can be proposed. Finally, the fuzzy-decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (fuzzy-DEMATEL) method is implemented to prioritize these initiatives and to construct a suitable lean road map by managing experts’ knowledge. Findings The practical results indicate that diagnosing the manufacturing system and managing experts’ knowledge to select the appropriate lean initiatives, and prioritizing these initiatives relying on the understanding of their interrelationship could support achieving the strategic targets without consuming extra time or resources. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to manufacturing firms. Besides, it reinforces the need for investigating the effectiveness of the proposed approach on service sectors. Practical implications The study provides a methodology with a real application, to manage experts’ knowledge for developing an effective lean improvement road map. The methodology could be adopted by any manufacturing firm. Originality/value The study supports decision makers of a firm to select the improvement initiatives by an original structural approach, which integrates BSC, TOC, FTA and fuzzy-DEMATEL. Besides, the interrelationships among the selected lean initiatives are considered, and results show the importance of analysing these interrelationships during the construction of the lean improvement plan. Moreover, its effectiveness and applicability are validated via a practical case study.
