Towards Management of Next Generation Networks

Abstract: SUMMARYNext Generation Network (NGN) is envisioned to be an inter-working environment of heterogeneous networks of wired and wireless access networks, PSTN, satellites, broadcasting, etc., all interconnected through the service provider's IP backbone and the Internet. NGN uses multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and servicerelated functions independent from underlying transport-related technologies. The operations and management of such interconnected networks are expected to be much more di… Show more

“…Different pricing scheme can be used to charge different types of service (Choi and Hong, 2007). For example, the SaaS users can be charged based on Science Publications JCS the network bandwidth consumed or amount of data stored; the PaaS users can be billed based on the processing resources consumed or duration of the platform used; and the IaaS users can be charged according to volume and duration of data stored or CPU hours used (Liu et al, 2011).…”

“…This heterogeneous networking environment faces new challenges such as generalized mobility, and network discovery and selection along with the traditional challenges such as security, QoS, and charging. Providing effective, secure and efficient operations and management of the envisioned NGN environment is a huge challenge [6]. It is noted that the NGN standards released by ITU-T at present, just defines an overall framework with its mandatory requirements, but no mandatory network technologies are specified in those standards or recommendations.…”
