Towards marketing biomethane in France—French consumers’ perception of biomethane

Abstract: Background: French energy policy calls for ambitious growth in the biogas sector, with the quantity of biomethane fed into the public grid targeted at 8 TWh per year by 2023. Although today biomethane in France serves predominantly as vehicle fuel, the domestic heating market, with its high share of gas heating, should see biogas growth in the future, provided consumer demand can develop and suppliers can emerge savvy enough to respond to that demand. Methods: Towards this end, we conducted qualitative intervi… Show more

“…The public considers environmental awareness (i.e., the use of waste), practical aspects (i.e., the ease of collection), and ethics (i.e., the competition with food crops) when evaluating biomass as a source of energy (Herbes et al, 2018). The acceptance of biomass for energy tends to be lower than of other forms of renewable energy technology (Boyd et al, 2019): biomass for energy is considered at an average level of sustainability by the public.…”

“…Numerous countries have established targets for replacing natural gas with biomethane in residential applications (Hoo et al 2020). For instance, France intends to support 8 TW-h of biomethane production by 2023 (Herbes et al 2018). The United Kingdom aims to use biomethane as the primary source of green gas in the future.…”

“…For domestic uses, many nations have set a target of replacing natural gas with biomethane by the year 2026 [144]. France is aiming to create 8 TWh of energy from biomethane by 2023 [145], according to its plans. Study predicts that biomethane will become a significant green and clean renewable energy source in the upcoming years.…”
