Towards Multi-Container Deployment on IoT Gateways

Abstract: Stringent latency requirements in advanced Internet of Things (IoT) applications as well as an increased load on cloud data centers have prompted a move towards a more decentralized approach, bringing storage and processing of IoT data closer to the end-devices through the deployment of multi-purpose IoT gateways. However, the resource constrained nature and diversity of these gateways pose a challenge in developing applications that can be deployed widely. This challenge can be overcome with containerization,… Show more

“…Their use has increased significantly in data centers, and also recently in IoT gateways (often referred to as ''edge computing'' systems) to monitor devices [35]. An adaptive and modular IoT gateway -called AGILE -was presented in [36]. The gateway hosts multi-containers and micro-service based framework to provide device management, data storage and access control.…”

“…In more details the AGILE project [17] designed and developed an information gateway focusing on the physical, network communication, processing, storage and application layers of the IoT stack. In addition, the designed software modules provide functions that facilitate device management, area and sensor communication networks and distributed storage.…”

“…Container is a software package that bundles applications' code with its runtime environment that includes libraries, configurations, and dependencies to start-up, migrate, and shutdown application more quickly [14]. A container uses operation system level virtualization to use host resources in isolation from other containers, thus, it has much less overhead comparing to Virtual Machines (VMs) [15,16]. There are several container solutions such as Dockers, Linux Containers, Solaris Zone, and RKT, which are orchestrated through tools like Kubernates (K8s), Docker Swarm (DS), and Amazon ECS.…”
