Towards Nanowire (Bio) Sensors

Abstract: Abstract. Nanowire based electrochemical devices represent a new and emerging class of sensors. In this work, we fabricate gold nanowires with well controlled critical dimensions using hybrid-electron beam lithography. Individual nanowire electrodes are routinely fabricated and are easily electrically contacted using overlay electrodes. Following fabrication, nanowire device performance is assessed using both electrical and electrochemical characterization techniques. We observe low electrical resistances (~ 9… Show more

“…Nowadays, metallic and semiconductor nanowires draw considerable attention due to their beneficial physical and chemical properties. Specifically, mechanical and electrical properties of gold nanowires have led to their exploitation for bioelectrical signal detection [1][2][3]. At the same time the possibility of tuning the band gap width in silicon nanowires makes them particularly suitable for optoelectronics applications [4][5].…”

“…GNWs are one-dimensional nanostructures with high aspect ratio (L/D > 500) [ 7 ]. Because of the high surface to volume ratio, large anisotropy and self-assembly ability, GNWs have been used as building blocks for nanostructured sensing devices in chemistry and biochemistry fields [ 8 ]. GNWs can be divided into two types, single crystalline and polycrystalline.…”

“…The polycrystalline GNWs, with larger diameter (>5 nm), are also synthesized by assembly of stable atomic clusters, but they have shown different properties with single crystalline GNWs [ 13 ]. For example, polycrystalline nanowires exhibit excellent mechanical strength [ 14 ], but their electron transport properties are not as good as single crystalline GNWs, as their grain boundaries result in lower conductivity [ 8 , 15 ].…”

“…Gold nanowire electrodes have also been fabricated and their potential use in biosensors demonstrated. O'Riordan and colleagues [67,68] have fabricated gold nanowire electrodes (100 nm  40 μm) using a hybrid electron beam lithography process which are easily contactable with overlaid interconnecting electrodes (Fig. 3.14).…”
