PurposeThis study aims to broaden the understanding of activist public relations in developing contexts. The power of formal laws and policies in developing contexts diminishes by traditional norms and authorities, and therefore, a great deal of activist public relations efforts is devoted to controlling destructive norms and informal authorities. Activist public relations literature often assumes powerful formal institutions that are capable to control behaviors. The authors challenge this assumption by exploring activist public relations against gender-based violence (GV) in Bangladesh.Design/methodology/approachThis study took an interpretative and social constructionist approach to examine public relations practices of two GV activist organizations in Bangladesh. The data were collected through observation, interviews and document analysis of four campaigns. The data were coded in NVivo.FindingsThe data show that the activist organizations used public relations campaigns for informal institutional work. The campaigns included educating various publics and storytelling to build supporting identities, norms and networks to address GV in Bangladesh.Research limitations/implicationsThe study has been limited to advocacy campaign of the non-governmental organizations.Practical implicationsThe knowledge from this study can be applied to the social development sectors where public relations is used to activate activism. In addition, the public relations practitioners and scholars can find how activists public relations is emerging in developing context.Originality/valueThe findings suggest that activist public relations in developing contexts carry out institutional work and create informal institutions to compensate for the formal institutional voids. In addition, this paper highlights the role of public relations in institutional work, to create and maintain contributory institutions or disrupt disturbing institutions.

Despite the diversity of paradigms in the field of public relations, it is evident that the dominant paradigm in the field is the functional paradigm, which defines public relations as a "management function". It leads to the ignorance of "cultural function" of public relations and becomes an obstacle to the development of the field. By establishing a relationship between public relations and culture, this article addresses public relations as a "cultural intermediary" profession that is influenced by the postmodern culture and (re)produces postmodern culture.In the article, three public relations campaigns determined by purposive sampling were analyzed using critical discourse analysis within the framework of multiple case analysis. How postmodern cultural features do public relations campaigns (re)produce; how they (re)produced the postmodern understanding of consumption, whether they reproduce the concepts of polyphony, equality and freedom by deconstructing modernity was analyzed. As a result, it is found that campaigns re(produce) the individualization, modular identity, spectacle, and simulation features of the postmodern culture of the campaigns and, the postmodern understanding of consumption by attributing "new meanings" to organizations and products. At the same time, it is found that they do not ensure polyphony, equality, and freedom by deconstructing modernity and resisting metanarratives, but rather "pretends" to reproduce them.

Evaluating Public Relations Through Socio-Cultural Perspectives: Public Relations as a Cultural Intermediary Profession Public Relations field has been influenced by management paradigm through long years. Evaluating public relations as a mean of "management" caused suppression of public relations' relationship with culture. However, studies addressing the relationship between public relations and culture has begun to increase after 2000's. The rise in the culture-centered studies generated a discussion about whether it is a "socio-cultural turn" or not. The main purpose of this article is to discuss arguments which evaluate public relations as a "cultural intermediary" profession. In this scope, firstly the criticisms of alternative perspectives towards management paradigm was emphasized. Thereafter, the meaning of "socio-cultural turn" in public relations and perspectives that argue this profession as a cultural intermediary was discussed. Finally, the approach that accepts public relations as a symbolically violent cultural intermediary was mentioned.
