“…As one of the major technical advances in the past few years, 3D printing technique has been widely applied to the medical field such as dentistry, surgery and prosthetic development , due to its low cost, high speed, precision and accuracy. 3D printing has also been utilized to fabricate interfaces for optical brain imaging in animal studies . Benefited from the 3D printing technique and the mature wearable EEG cap technique, in our study, a 3‐layer DOT head interface was implemented: the outer layer was 3D printed with PLA material for initial orientation and weight support, the inner layer was printed with flexible rubber material for tight/comfort connection between the fiber bundles and head surface, and the modified 256‐channel EEG cap was used for final orientation and housing of the source/detector fibers.…”

“…The DOT data acquisition system used was described in detail elsewhere in our previous animal studies . Briefly, 144 light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) were used as the excitation sources, while highly sensitive avalanche photodiodes were utilized as light detectors.…”

“…The image reconstruction time was limited by CPU-based computer system. Graphic processing units (GPU) based parallel reconstruction algorithm can be developed to accelerate the image reconstruction, which was proved to be a powerful tool in our previous work [31]. In addition, the time desired for data acquisition needs to be significantly reduced to perform real-time image-guided surgery.…”

“…Localization and real-time monitoring of spontaneous and evoked neuronal activity in the brain are important in understanding the functional characteristics of neural networks and brain function (Bouchard et al, 2009; Inyushin et al, 2013; Lenkov et al, 2012; Silasi et al, 2016; Zhang et al, 2014). …”
