As of today, a lot of different approaches have been dealing with the presentation of art history resources on the Web. While the majority of these focused on traditional 2D methods of display, some did introduce the application of 3D visualization metaphors. Such environments were, however, usually tailored to a specific collection or topic, such as a featured artist or epoch. Meanwhile, the increasing availability of valuable metadata resources has opened up the perspective for the automatic creation of such 3D environments by integrating semantic data sources through the Web. In this work we therefore present a prototype that automatically constructs a 3D environment from semantic art history related Web resources, offering users the opportunity to explore art history following the visualized structure of relations between historical actors of the field. Traversing this historical social network enables users to encounter previously unknown artists and their work in a serendipitous way.

In recent years, the number of data collections that are publicly available via the Internet has dramatically increased. Web based semantic databases like Wikipedia derivate DbPedia extend the functionality of Wikipedia by allowing semantic annotations to the information that is usually in form of free text. Since these data collections also cover broad topics related to the Cultural Heritage (CH) domain, they might be well suited to serve as data sources for Cultural Information Systems. Besides the mentioned community based knowledge bases, a number of dedicated Web galleries, for example the Web Gallery of Art (WGA), offer huge digital collections of artworks and relevant metadata. Moreover, renowned institutions like the Getty Foundation provide rich vocabularies of CH related terms that are rather aimed at professional users. We believe that a combination of such different sources might provide interesting insights that would not be available when using each source alone. We therefore propose a system that combines these sources and displays them by using methods from Information Visualisation. We apply the metaphor of 3D Information Landscapes, based on a graph visualisation showing artists and their artworks as nodes and their mutual relationships such as teacher/student, parent/child etc. as edges. The resulting network is drawn in chronological order, thus allowing users to explore art history in a new way.

We present the H3 layout technique for drawing large directed graphs as node-link diagrams in 3D hyperbolic space. We can lay out much larger structures than can be handled using traditional techniques for drawing general graphs because we assume a hierarchical nature of the data. We impose a hierarchy on the graph by using domain-specific knowledge to find an appropriate spanning tree. Links which are not part of the spanning tree do not influence the layout but can be selectively drawn by user request.The volume of hyperbolic 3-space increases exponentially, as opposed to the familiar geometric increase of euclidean 3-space. We exploit this exponentialamount of room by computing the layout according to the hyperbolic metric. We optimize the cone tree layout algorithm for 3D hyperbolic space by placing children on a hemisphere around the cone mouth instead of on its perimeter. Hyperbolic navigation affords a Focus+Context view of the structure with minimal visual clutter. We have successfully laid out hierarchies of over 20,000 nodes. Our implementation accommodates navigation through graphs too large to be rendered interactively by allowing the user to explicitly prune or expand subtrees.
