Towards rich information landscapes for visualising structured Web spaces

Abstract: The Harmony client and authoring tool for Hyper-G provides numerous information management and visualisation coupled, two-and three-dimensional visualisation and navigational facilities. In particulal; the Harmony Information Landscape visualises the hierarchical structure of HYPer-G spaces upon a plane in three-dimensional space. tools [51, In particular, the Harmony Information Landscape visualises the hierarchical structure of Hyper-G (and Gopher) spaces upon a plane in three-dimensional space. “…The metaphor has been proposed for visualizing hierarchical document collections [2] or digital libraries [17]. With respect to the previously mentioned issues regarding the simultaneous display of structure and content, we nevertheless believe that this approach is well suited to the domain of art history.…”

“…The Information Landscape metapho old principle of displaying hierarchical structures within 3D immersive environments (Andrews et al 1996) but has proved to be effective with respect to alternative 3D approaches for comparable da collections (Wiss & Carr 1999 choose an appropriate graph layout algorithm in order to transform the data relations into a chronological timeline representation. We chose to implement an approach based on the well established DAG algorithm (Gansner et al 1993) for drawing layered directed graphs, assigning the artists birth dates to layers, leading to a layered graph representation with each layer representing an arbitrary timespan in history.…”

“…The Information Landscape metaphor is a rather old principle of displaying hierarchical structures within 3D immersive environments (Andrews et al 1996) but has proved to be effective with respect to alternative 3D approaches for comparable datacollections (Wiss & Carr 1999). We therefore had to choose an appropriate graph layout algorithm in order to transform the data relations into a chronological timeline representation.…”

“…The Harmony Information Landscape [APW96] extended this metaphor to more fully exploit 3D space by showing hyperlink relationships between Web or Hyper-G documents superimposed above and below the decorated plane.…”
