Towards sustainable and resilient short food supply chains: a focus on sustainability practices and resilience capabilities using case study

Abstract: PurposeThis study aims to advance current knowledge on resilient and sustainable short food supply chains, by identifying sustainability practices and resilience capabilities and how these interact.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical data were collected from three cases via 16 semi-structured interviews. This methodological choice answers a call to develop more case studies to better understand perspectives on sustainable and resilient supply chains. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis.FindingsSustai… Show more

“…Moreover, design optimization techniques have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in enhancing energy efficiency across mechanical systems. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations have been employed to assess the thermal performance of components and systems, identifying areas for improvement and optimization [2]. By optimizing the design of heat exchangers, for example, simulations have shown a potential energy savings of up to 20%, thus highlighting the tangible benefits of incorporating advanced engineering techniques.…”

“…Sustainable supply chain practices refer to the integration of environmentally and socially responsible strategies within the procurement, production, and distribution processes of a company' s supply chain (Paul et al, 2021). These practices aim to minimize ecological damage, promote fair labor conditions, and ensure the efficient use of resources throughout the lifecycle of a product or service (Michel-Villarreal, 2023).…”

“…Some literature qualitatively studied the factors of food supply chain resilience. Michel-Villarreal (2022) collected empirical data to analyze the relationship between sustainability and resilience of short food supply chains. Orengo Serra and Sanchez-Jauregui (2021) conducted a combination of qualitative methods through the managerial actions including innovating, transforming and so on to see the food supply chain resilience.…”

“…According to the Global Powers of Retailing 2023, the aggregate retail revenue of top 250 is $5.6 trillion (Global Powers of Retailing, 2023). In China, according to the "China Statistical Yearbook-2022", the sales of retail chain were 3840.02 billion yuan, and the total number of retail stores reached 292,383 in 2021(Compilation Committee of China Statistical Yearbook-2022, 2022. However, extreme natural disasters, public health incidents, supplier collusion and even malicious competition from competitors may cause disruption risks in the upstream level of the supply chain and lead to an inability to meet demand of retailers in the downstream.…”
