Abstract-A background of activity is presented for signal processing as applied to, and used in, magnetic information storage systems. Specific examples are given of how current and previous research projects fit into the overall progress of research in this area. Arguments are presented as to why, in the distant future, information will be stored as "analogue" information rather than binary so methods and techniques will need to be developed to utilize the near-infinite capacity of such systems.

A b s f r a c f -A new type of multitrack readout head is described which uses an optical detection scheme associated wilh a h i g h resolution magnetic readout of the tape. A Kerr effect transducer allows t h i s magnetooptical readout. W e present t h e general design of such a transducer and t h e experimental results we obtained. Measured performances prove that a CCD linear photodetector can be used to achieve a multitrack high resolution readout of magnetic tapes. This head is one of the two devices of a fixed head recording system which is developed to accomodate t h e video bit rate Imposed by the future digital television.
