Towards Tunable Graphene/Phthalocyanine–PPV Hybrid Systems

Abstract: Exfoliation of graphite was achieved using a zinc phthalocyanine oligomer that is also an electron donor. The resulting functionalized graphene material was investigated by Raman and electron spectroscopy and was trialed in a photoelectrochemical cell.

“…Importantly, it is worth mentioning that an IPCE value of only 0.3% was regis--tered for non--covalently interacting ZnPc with gra--phene, 32 thus, highlighting the significant role of having the ZnPc anchored through a stable and robust bond on--to the graphene sheet, for enhancing photoinduced in--trahybrid electron transfer phenomena between the two components and achieving higher IPCE values. …”

“…From previous studies, we infer that this band is due a charge-transfer state. 16,21,22 A look at the uorescence spectra reveals that the successive addition of SWCNTs to solutions of either PPV-Zn(II)Pc 1a or PPV-Pd(II)Pc 1b induces a Fig. 1 Upper part -normalized absorption spectra of 1 Â 10 À5 M solutions of PPV-Pd(II)Pc 1b oligomer (black spectrum) and PPV-Zn(II)Pc 1a oligomer (dark grey spectrum) in DMF at room temperature.…”

“…Beneficial was its use as a spectroscopic marker for probing electron transfer processes in solution. [19] A major concern related with this approach is the stability of the chromophores during the ultrasound treatment. Therefore, we report here on a novel non-invasive functionalization approach, namely tuning/altering the intrinsic features of photochemically "transparent" graphene, by integrating water-soluble porphyrins.…”
