Towards water literacy: an interdisciplinary analysis of standards for teaching and learning about humans and Water

Abstract: Water is critical to sustain human existence. Water literacy involves understanding the interactions within and between natural and human dimensions of water systems to support informed decision-making, an important outcome for learners of all ages. It is therefore critical to foster water literacy in today’s global citizens, particularly through formal education. The purpose of this study, in tandem with a parallel study focusing on natural dimensions of water systems (Mostacedo-Marasovic et al., in press), i… Show more

“…Traditionally, the analysis of curriculum standards has served two primary purposes, to assess the quality of the standards and to compare the similarities and differences between or among sets of standards (Tran et al, 2016). Many studies on curriculum standards analysis have employed content analysis (Carr et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2021;Mostacedo-Marasovic et al, 2022;Wei et al, 2019;Zeng & Wang, 2021). For instance, Carr et al (2012) used content analysis to compile and analyze the presence and scope of engineering in the K-12 STEM standards in all 50 U.S. states and provided a consensus of the big ideas found in the standards.…”

“…McCarroll and Hamann [37] found a main emphasis on the cognitive learning domain in the literature, although the importance of the affective and behavioural domains is considered very important by water literacy practitioners. More recently, in 2022, Mostacedo-Marasovic, Mott, White, and Forbes [38] examined United States educational, governmental, and non-governmental organisations' water-related K-12 standards for teaching and learning about human dimensions of water systems to compile an inclusive, transdisciplinary perspective on water literacy education. Based exclusively in the context of the United States, their results echoed the findings of McCarroll and Hamann [37].…”

“…Primary schools play an important role in raising awareness, imparting knowledge, and promoting positive behavior changes among students, highlighting the importance of clean water, proper sanitation, and water conservation (Amahmid et al, 2019;Khiri et al, 2023). To create this, integrating scientific literacy (SL) during water education programs is important (Mostacedo-Marasovic et al, 2022). By empowering students with SL, they gain the ability to critically evaluate information and actively participate in the sustainable management of natural resources (e.g., Kaya et al, 2012;Smith et al, 2012).…”
