Leisure and the racing of national populism

While leisure, race, and national populism have been minimally linked and theorized in the literature, we take this moment, during the global turn to national populism and conservative regimes, to center leisure and race in the politics of today. While theorizing the link to leisure and national populism, we center how the turn towards ethno-nationalist populism derives from the workings of race, alongside class, caste, and ethnicity, in various global north and global south leisure contexts. We provide an introduction that puts in conversation the realms of leisure (in all its possibilities), race, and the various modes of national populism. Therefore, we provide both the important theoretical foundations to understanding these relationships while offering numerous instances of such shifts to national populism. In particular, we start the conversation with a case of the realm of art, sport, and protest as a way to pull out the extraordinary links to social phenomenon, power, and theory.

“…Entre las distintas aproximaciones se destacan discursos y prácticas que imposibilitan identidades homosexuales musulmanas, por una incompatibilidad entre ser gay/lesbiana y musulmán (Kehl, 2019;Cherry, 2018;Ammaturo, 2016;Mepschen, 2016;Jivraj y Jong, 2011); que identifican en la población musulmana e inmigrada potenciales homófobos (Rexhepi, 2016;Jivraj y Jong, 2011); vinculan la "Guerra contra el Terror" a la promoción de derechos de minorías sexuales (Bracke, 2012); asocian la tolerancia con gais y lesbianas a algo propio de occidente y las sociedades avanzadas (Ammaturo, 2015;Nebeling y Myong, 2015;Kulpa, 2014); y una extrema derecha que reivindica la defensa de gais y lesbianas contra la inmigración (Dhoest, 2019;Kehl, 2018;Hatfield, 2018;Hubbard y Wilkinson, 2015). El término homonacionalismo ofrece una nueva aproximación a la relación entre racismo y tolerancia con gais y lesbianas en sociedades contemporáneas. Este trabajo presenta un estudio comparativo sobre la extensión y evolución de valores homonacionalistas en Argentina, España, Países Bajos y Uruguay entre 1989-1993 y 2010-2014 siendo uno de los pocos trabajos cuantitativos en los estudios sobre homonacionalismo. Mediante el análisis de las oleadas de la World Value Survey para los distintos países, se operativiza el concepto para evidenciar la irrupción de los valores homonacionalistas en Europa a partir de 2001; así como su extensión a otras regiones propicias para la construcción de un excepcionalismo sexual. Los resultados si bien constatan su fuerte presencia en los discursos contradicen la hegemonía homonacionalista en los valores de las sociedades.
