Toxicity and Spectroscopic Characterization of New Organotin(IV) Complexes with a Bidentate Imine, 4-(2'-Furyl ethanimino)-N-(2'-pyridyl)benzene sulphonamide

Abstract

The penta-and hexa-coordinated, tirgonal bipyramidal and octahedral complexes of organotin(IV) have been synthesized. The imine and its tin complexes were also tested in vitro against fungi: Aspergillus niger, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata; bacteria: Escherichia coli(-), Klebsiella aerogenous(-), Pseudomonas cepacicola(-) and Staphylococcus aureus(+)·, nematode: Meloidogyne incognita; and insect: Trogoderma granarium to assess their antimicrobial properties. All the complexes have been shown to have high toxicity at very low concentrations, against a number of microorganisms. The complexes were synthesized by the reactions of a bidentate imine, 4-(2'-furyl ethanimino)-N-(2'-pyridyl)benzene sulphonamide, with Ph 3 SnCl, Ph 2 SnCl 2 and Me 2 SnCl 2 . The resulting new complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations, conductivity measurements and infrared, U.V., 'H NMR, ,3 C NMR and U9 Sn NMR spectral data. The IR and 'H NMR spectral data suggest that the imine acts in a monofunctional bidentate manner coordinating through the nitrogen atom. Organotin(IV) chelates with nitrogen donor ligands have received much attention during the last few years. Sulphonamide imines and their organotin(IV) complexes are an important class of chemical substances which are being used extensively for the treatment of several diseases and have applications in synthetic and analytical chemistry. Their importance as herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, acaricides, antifeedant, antitumour, fungicides, bactericides, antivirus and plant growth regulators is well known /3-15/. Organotin(IV) compounds containing electronegative atoms such as halogen show Lewis acidic character and the tin atom increases its coordination number from four to five or six by addition of neutral organic donor ligands. There have been numerous studies on the adduct formation by organotin(IV) halides with a variety of O, S and N-containing ligands. Due to the widespread applications of organotin(IV) complexes, they have played an important role in medicine, agriculture and industry /16/. A variety of organotin complexes are now known to show biocidal and pesticidal activity. The chemical properties, structural characterization and biological significance of many of these compounds have recently been investigated /17/. The importance of organotin(IV) moiety in both biology and environment is now well established /18/. In this paper new complexes of Ph 3 SnCl, Ph 2 SnCl 2 and Me 2 SnCl 2 with the ligand sulphonamide imine have been synthesized and characterized. The results of these studies are reported herein.
