Toxicity of biorational insecticides: activity against the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer)

Abstract: The relationship between dose for each of four biorational insecticides (pyrethrins, neem extract, capsiacin extract, insecticidal soap) and mortality of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) was determined using a laboratory bioassay. These insecticides were toxic to aphids and paired mixtures of the insecticides provided synergistic activity as measured by aphid mortality under the laboratory bioassay conditions. Capsiacin extracts were found to provide low levels of mortality alone but acted synergisticall… Show more

“…Our results are consistent with previous studies that showed that M. persicae is susceptible to insecticidal soap (Edelson et al 2002;Fournier and Brodeur 2000). At a concentration of 12.50 g L effectively controlled populations of M. persicae on chrysanthemums and Aphis gossypii Glov.…”

“…Capsaicin is known to deter oviposition in the onion fly Delia antiqua (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) (Cowles et al, 1989), to inhibit the feeding of a ladybird beetle Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) (Hori et al, 2011), and to retard larval growth in the spiny bollworm Earias insulana (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (Weissenberg et al, 1986). Capsicum extracts have larvicidal activity to two species of mosquitoes, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus (Madhumathy et al, 2007), and synergistic effects with insecticides on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Edelson et al, 2002). Larval development time of Ostrinia nubilalis was significantly delayed on pungent rather than nonpungent peppers (Larue and Welty, 2010).…”

“…Aphids would be covered with a thin film of oily materials such as fatty acids produced from plant oils. Botanical insecticides, such as nicotine from tobacco leaves, rotenone from derris tree roots, pyrethrum from chrysanthemum flowers and azadirachitin from neem tree have accepted as alternatives to conventional synthetic insecticides (Isman, 1997;Edelson, 2002;Casanova et al, 2005, Kim et al, 2007). The plant oil formulations can be also used in order to increase the insecticidal efficacy of botanical insecticides.…”
