Toxicity Testing and the Effect of Landfill Leachate in Malaysia on Behavior of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758; Pisces, Cyprinidae)

Abstract: Problem Statement: Landfill leachate had been implicated in environmental pollution, developmental anomalies, birth defect and surface and groundwater pollution worldwide. This study has been conducted to determine the toxicity of landfill leachate from three different landfills in Malaysia on fry common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758; Pisces, Cyprinidae) in combination with some physico-chemical parameters analysis. Approach: Leachates were collected from Air Hitam (AHL), Ampar Tenang (ATL) and Sungai Sedu (S… Show more

“…II. Investigated landfill leachates showed similar characteristics to the leachates sampled in other MSW landfills (Kulikowska and Klimiuk 2008;Guo et al, 2010;Kalčíková et al, 2014) (Isidori et al, 2003;Silva et al, 2004;Alkassasbeh et al, 2009;Budi et al, 2016). Relatively low trace elements concentrations are suggesting that Zdounky-Kuchyňky leachate does not represent a significant trace elements hazard.…”

“…Mortality and abnormal behavioral responses were recorded every 24 h, until 96 h (Company et al, 2010). During the experiment, dead fish were removed immediately because such mortality in static bioassays may deplete the DO, affecting tolerance limits (Alkassasbeh et al, 2009). The results are expressed as mean ± SD…”
