Toxicological Aspects of the South American Herbs Cat???s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) and Maca (Lepidium meyenii)

Abstract: Recent exceptional growth in human exposure to natural products known to originate from traditional medicine has lead to a resurgence of scientific interest in their biological effects. As a strategy for improvement of the assessment of their pharmacological and toxicological profile, scientific evidence-based approaches are being employed to appropriately evaluate composition, quality, potential medicinal activity and safety of these natural products. Using this approach, we comprehensively reviewed existing … Show more

“…Histopathological organ changes were not observed in either group of mice except in three liver samples of the test group which had a mild focal necrosis. The platelet count (11.33依0.35) 伊10 5 /µL (P=0.000 04) and the RBC count (7.97依0.61)伊10 6 /µL (P=0.000 03) were significantly increased in the test group compared to that of the controls. However in height, with a crown of large palmate leaves emerging from the apex of the trunk.…”

“…Many plants used in traditional and folk medicines are potentially toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic [6][7][8][9][10][11] . Toxicological studies of extracts from different parts of C. papaya plants such as seeds, fruit, roots and leaves have been carried out using several animal models.…”

“…This fact has lead to a resurgence of scientific interest in their biological effects. In most countries there is no universal regulatory system insuring the safety and activity of natural products and they had not been sufficiently investigated analytically or toxicologically (Valerio Jr.&Gonzales, 2005). Herbal medicines can be potentially toxic to human health.…”
