Toxoplasma gondii

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis encompasses a variety of clinical conditions. Serious sequelae are seen in congenital toxoplasmosis and in infections of the immunocompromised host. In the former, prevention of maternal acquisition of toxoplasmosis during pregnancy is paramount. Infection in the compromised host often presents with neurologic abnormalities. Unfortunately, the HIV syndrome itself or other opportunistic infections can present in a similar manner. Often, empiric treatment for toxoplasmosis is begun based on clinica… Show more

“…Only one of them, p83/100, occurred as a single spot on the pattern. teria for positive immunoblots: for IgM immunoblots at least two of the following three bands, OspC, 39, 41 [57] and for IgG immunoblots at least five of the ten following bands, 18, OspC, 28,30,39,41,45,58,66, 83/100 [58]. Standardization of immunoblots has not been established so far in Europe.…”

“…In case of IgA the reaction was more frequent in groups 1 and 2 as expected. Antibodies present in the other materials, like the amniotic £uid, the cord blood sample and the cerebrospinal £uid (CSF), reacted with the same spots [3,7,9,10,13,16,21,25,32,35] which were most frequently detected by all four immunoglobulin classes present in the patients sera. Only a few particularities were observed: Spot 1 gave positive responses exclusively with IgG.…”

“…This infection is generally mild or asymptomatic in healthy persons, whereas acquisition during the first pregnancy severely affects the organogenesis of the fetus resulting in congenital disease [57]. A high risk of complications from T. gondii infection has also been documented in immunocompromised patients.…”
