TP53 codon 72 polymorphism in 12 populations of insular Southeast Asia and Oceania

Abstract: Distribution of a single nucleotide polymorphism in the TP53 codon 72 (Arg/Pro) was studied in Southeast Asia and Oceania where information about this polymorphism was lacking. A polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method was employed to genotype a total of 733 subjects from 12 populations in insular Southeast Asia and Oceania. These populations have been classified as either an Austronesianspeaking group or Papuan-speaking group. The p53Arg frequencies ranged from 0.06 in the Se… Show more

“…The highly significant tumor suppressor gene, TP53, is implicated in a wide range of human cancers, including brain tumors (Biros et al, 2002). P53 is a multifunctional protein that plays central roles in cellular responses to DNA damage, cellular senescence and apoptosis to maintain genomic stability of a cell (Kashima et al, 2007).…”

“…The Arg72 allele frequency among all samples of the Mandarese Austronesian-speaking ethnic group members was 0.44. A previous study revealed that the Arg72 allele frequencies among the two largest ethnic groups in South Sulawesi (Torajans and Buginese) from locations near West Sulawesi were 0.45 and 0.55, respectively [19]. Based on those findings, it can be postulated that the historical backgrounds of the Takandeang, Salleto, and Ahu village inhabitants were potentially closer to the Torajans than to the Buginese.…”

“…It was reported that the allele distribution at codon 72 of TP53 varies depending on geographical locations (44,45). Therefore, to clarify the association between codon 72 polymorphism and the glioma risk in different genetic backgrounds and remove heterogeneity, we analyzed the collected data by subgrouping the high-grade glioma group according to the geographical locations.…”
