Trace analysis of semi‐volatile organic air pollutants using thick film silicone rubber traps with capillary gas chromatography

Abstract: SummaryEstablished standard methods for analyzing semi-volatile pollutants by capillary gas chromatography are cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive. With the longer term aim of replacing the sample preparation procedures with convenient concentrating and thermal desorption steps, thick film silicone rubber traps were constructed in a novel multi-channel configuration. Tests were performed to determine breakthrough volumes and thermal desorption characteristics for total transfer of the trap contents to a … Show more

“…Multichannel traps containing 0.099±0.02 g silicone, providing a sample enrichment volume of 106 µL PDMS, were prepared based on a technique described by Ortner and Rohwer [30]. The MCT was designed to fit a commercial thermal desorber system.…”

“…Particulates were sampled 10 min after ignition of the fire for 30 min onto pre-cleaned quartz fibre filters (6 mm diameter), held between two empty glass tubes with a Teflon connection. Gas phase organic emissions were sampled for 10 min onto two polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) multi-channel rubber traps [5] in series (primary and secondary traps, respectively) 40 min after ignition.…”

“…Traps which had been originally designed for solventless GC-MS analysis of environmental air and water samples (Ortner and Rohwer, 1996) were modified only by replacing the outer borosilicate glass sleeve by one made of UV-transparent quartz. The traps contained 22 internal silicone tubes, each 5.5 cm long (Sil-Tec, Technical Products, USA).…”

“…Multi-channel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) traps have been developed for semi-volatile organic air pollutant monitoring with TD-GC-MS analysis (Ortner and Rohwer, 1996). Packed bed PDMS traps (Baltussen et al, 1997) and mixed bed traps containing PDMS foam, PDMS particles and Tenax TA (Wauters et al, 2008) have also been tested in this application.…”
