Trace Determination of Tamoxifen in Biological Fluids Using Hollow Fiber Liquid-Phase Microextraction Followed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Detection

Abstract: The applicability of hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was evaluated for the extraction and determination of tamoxifen (TAM) in biological fluids including human urine and plasma. The drug was extracted from a 15 mL aqueous sample (source phase; SP) into an organic phase impregnated in the pores of the hollow fiber (membrane phase; MP) followed by the back-extraction into a second aqueous solution (receiving … Show more

“…Analytical parameters of introduced method were compared with some of previous TAM determination techniques and the results were listed in Table S2 . The comparative results show that the dynamic linear range of presented method is wider than the other introduced methods, which can be due to the presence of porous and GO nanoparticles in adsorbent structure and high absorption capacity of electrospun PET/GO nanofibers.…”

“…SPE not only needs a large quantity of the solvent and sample but also is timeconsuming and tedious [39][40][41]. Hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and single drop microextraction (SDME) were formerly applied for preconcentration of TAM in different matrices [42,43]. The extraction time for HF-LPME (60 min) is longer than SDME (25 min), while the time for the proposed technique is < 1 min.…”

“…Tamoxifen therapy decreases the recursion risk of breast cancer and improves overall survival rates [4]. Tamoxifen's primary mechanism of action is competitive inhibition of the estrogen α-receptor by inhibiting growth of malignant breast cells [5]. However, tamoxifen doesn't prove same benefits for all women, and the side effect profiles change considerably from patient to patient [6].…”
