“…However, copper, selenium and zinc were rated normal, iodine elevated and manganese lowered when compared to cattle values. In a recent study, numerous trace elements have been assessed in livers of 30 captive and free-living European bison [ 41 ]. Interestingly, deficiency of Mn was also present in 20% of captive and 37% of free-ranging animals.…”

“…Bioindication provides information about the direct reaction of organisms, communities or ecosystems to natural or anthropogenic changes (Durkalec et al, 2018), since the biota reacts even to minor changes in external conditions and can even predict the geographical origin (Denisova et al, 2008;Franke et al, 2005;Gauthier-Lafaye et al, 2008;Huang et al, 2017;Ilyinskikh et al, 1998;Sheppard, 2011). The concentration of metals in the body of animals and human beings depends, not only on anthropogenic activity (Durkalec et al, 2018), but also on type of diet (Wang et al, 2014;Zhao et al, 2016), physiological specification of organs and tissues (Carpenè et al, 2017), and genetic characteristics of organism (Demirezen and Uruç, 2006). Bioindication includes a system for monitoring the state of the environment, assessing and forecasting changes in the medias (soil, water, air, biota) under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors ("EcoLife", 2018).…”

“…Briefly, homogenized liver samples were mineralized in a mixture of 3 mL concentrated nitric acid HNO 3 (69%, Normatom, VWR, Leuven, Belgium) and 0.5 mL of 30% non-stabilized hydrogen peroxide solution (Suprapur, Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) using a Speedwave 4 microwave digestion system equipped with DAC-100 vessels (Berghof, Einingen, Germany). The analysis of the total element content was performed by ICP-MS (7700x, Agilent, Tokyo, Japan) as described previously (Durkalec et al 2018 ). The reliability of the obtained results was verified by analyzing the DORM-4 fish protein certified reference material (NRC, Ontario, Canada) (Supplementary Table S1 ).…”
