Traceability and Characterization of a 1000 kV HVDC Reference Divider

Abstract: This paper presents the characterization of a resistive high-voltage dc (HVDC) reference divider and methods to establish traceability. The divider is designed for use as a laboratory reference for calibration of HVDC measuring systems up to 1000 kV. Targeting a measurement uncertainty of 20 µV/V at full voltage has put a focus on the temperature coefficients of the resistors, elimination of humidity dependence, and control of leakage currents in the high-voltage arm. A scale factor calibration against a 50 kV… Show more

“…The noise is higher on positive voltage, which indicates that external corona may be the primary cause. There is also a drop in the scale factor quotient at the end of the run, which was due to the degradation of three resistors, discovered after disassembly of the reference divider [17]. The difference in observed scale factor difference between 200 and 1000 kV is approximately 30 µV/V.…”

“…The scale factors for the different module combinations and SP reference divider [17] calibrated at low voltage are shown in Table I. The values shown in the table are corrected for the effects of heating and voltage dependence at full nominal voltage for each divider.…”

“…The two stacked modular dividers were compared with each other; the modular 1000 kV divider was also compared with a resistive 1000 kV reference divider based on wire-wound resistors [2]. A six hour long run of the latter comparison is shown in Fig.…”
