“…This subject matter addressed diverse issues, such as the introduction of EPCIS framework and UML (Thakur et al, 2011), the development of a theory about the relationship between supply network complexity and the traceability of adverse events (Skilton and Robinson, 2009), or the development of a methodology for the implementation of the vegetable supply chain traceability (Hu et al, 2013). Although we count 21 papers in the category of theoretical models, as stated before, very few of these papers actually deal with explicit theories, with three exceptions: two papers (Dien Vo et al, 2016;Stranieri et al, 2017) deal with transaction cost economics and one (Wanjiru and Makori, 2016) deals with neo-institutionalism. Hence, the term theoretical model reflects the more conceptual nature of papers rather than a profound theoretical discussion, in most cases.…”

“…From this set, 13 were general and addressed the food sector without any type of specifications. The remaining case studies were specific: chocolate (Saltini and Akkerman, 2012;Acierno et al, 2017), farming (Bertolini et al, 2006), agrifood (Gandino et al, 2009;Hobbs, 2004;Zhang et al, 2010), fruit and vegetable (Rábade and Alfaro, 2006;Pakurar, 2015), aquaculture (Parreño-Marchante et al, 2014;Parenreng et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2017;Cawthorn and Mariani, 2017) and seafood (Donnelly and Olsen, 2012;Karlsen and Olsen, 2011;Ibáñez, 2015;Dien Vo et al, 2016). Studies in industries different from the food industry dealt with fashion (Guercinia and Runfola, 2009;Gobbi and Massa, 2015), solid waste management (Gnoni et al, 2013), forestry (Saikouk and Spalanzani, 2016), blood supply (Bentahar et al, 2016) and automotive (Sohal, 1997).…”

“…However, 50% of seafood exports to the developed world come from developing countries (Bailey et al, 2016;FAO, 2016). Therefore, some of the major topics in seafood supply chain literature are traceability, certification, fish safety and quality to transform or shape seafood governance to improve seafood management, or the role of relations and networking in the flow of seafood products (Al-Busaidi et al, 2016;Glavee-Geo & Engelseth, 2018;Sampson et al, 2015;Vo et al, 2016). However, these measures also represent additional costs to industry.…”

“…A survey of Tran, et al [53] show that the majority of shrimp farmers operate in rural areas without roads, and that this leads to the existence of various levels of middlemen who mostly are uneducated, unaware and even ignore of the importance of food safety issues [54] and may distort information about food safety regulation as well as impacting on the traceability system. The development of information communication infrastructure in the Vietnamese agricultural sector and seafood supply chain is still in its infancy [55], and this leads to the lack of traceability to take control of food safety compliance.…”
