“…The export-led growth theorists in general claim that export enhances productivity growth (Bonelli, 1992;Haddad, de Melo & Horton, 1996;Weinhold & Rauch, 1999;Yean 1997;and Sjoeholm, 1999).These theorists claim that firms tend to learn advanced technologies through exports which they should implement to compete in the foreign marketplace (Balassa, 1978;Krueger, 1980;Nishimizu & Robinson, 1982). Firms also learn by doing and replicate through the trial and error processes innate in the production and sale of export goods (Grossman & Helpman, 1991).Moreover, expansion in production resulting from exports reduces unit production prices and thus increase productivity (Helpman & Krugman, 1985).These arguments must have worked to make the effect of export trade positive and significant on the total factor productivity in the economy of Nepal.…”

“…To this effect, the OECD will analyze the binding constraints to agriculture trade expansion as part of its Programme of Work andBudget 2011-2012 6. See, among others, Michaely (1977), Balassa (1978Balassa ( , 1982, Nishimizu and Robinson (1984), Page (1990), andTybout (1992).…”

“…Greenaway, Morgan and Wright (2002) evaluated the impact of trade liberalisation on 70 developing countries and found a significant positive relationship between trade liberalisation and economic growth. Nishimizu and Robinson (1984) study on trade policies and productivity change in semi-industrialised countries explored the impact of trade regimes on total factor productivity (TFP) growth within a quantitative framework in a study of four countries, namely Korea, Turkey, former Yugoslavia and Japan as the comparator. The analysis of the inter-industry differences in TFP growth rates at the two-digital level, found that substantial portions of variation in TFP growth rates can be explained by the output growth allocated to export expansion and import substitution in Korea, Turkey and former Yugoslavia, but interestingly not in Japan.…”
