Tradeoff breaking as model of evolutionary transitions in individuality and the limits of the fitness decoupling metaphor

Abstract: Evolutionary transitions in individuality (ETIs) involve the formation of Darwinian collectives from Darwinian particles. The transition from cells to multicellular life is a prime example.
