Traditional Chinese decoction Si Zhi Wan attenuates ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and promoting apoptosis of mature osteoclasts

Abstract: Si Zhi Wan (SZW) is a traditional Chinese decoction used for osteoporosis treatment. Currently, the effect of SZW on ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss and the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Herein, we investigated the therapeutic effect of SZW on osteoporosis and explored the underlying mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. An OVX-induced bone loss model was established in vivo. After administration of SZW for 8 weeks, rats were sacrificed, and the uterus was weighted to calculate its index. The femur chan… Show more

“…Si–Zhi–Wan (SZW) is a traditional Chinese medicinal decoction used to treat osteoporosis. SZW inhibited osteoclast generation in vitro and in vivo, attenuated osteoclast‐mediated bone resorption, and promoted the apoptosis of mature osteoclasts (He et al, 2022). Buxue Tongluo pills (BTPs) are self‐made pills that nourish the blood and promote blood circulation, relieve pain, and regulate the meridians.…”

“…Over the course of a person’s lifetime, this process will continue. The lifelong process occurs asynchronously through temporary equilibrium anatomic structures called basic multicellular units (BMUs), which are composed of different cell types such as osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes [ 1 , 2 ]. BMUs play a crucial role in maintaining bone quality and structural integrity and in regenerating it physiologically.…”
