Traditional Chinese Medicine QPYF as Preventive Treatment for Clostridium difficile Associated Diarrhea in a Mouse Model

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine QPYF has a good effect for treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to test its efficacy to prevent Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) in a mouse model. C57BL/6 mice were infected with Clostridium difficile VPI 10463 after exposure to antimicrobial mixture. QPYF was administered from 7 days prior to Clostridium difficile infection to 20 days after infection, and its effect was compared with no treatment and receiving place… Show more

“…Therefore, the levels of inflammatory cytokines are evaluated in AAD, including TNF and IL-8. In our results, TCM can improve some inflammation factors, such as TNF and IL-8, while TCM makes no difference in hs-CRP, which is consistent with the results reported by Ya-Nan et al [ 55 ]. However, due to the limited study number, we cannot draw a definite conclusion about the results so far.…”

“…However, the increase of total eubacteria in the large intestine may be attributed to the increase of Lactobacillus genus , Enterobacteriaceae family , and Clostridium coccoides. Consistent with this notion, PR can be used as a preventive treatment for Clostridium difficile- associated diarrhea in a mouse model 71 . A lower abundance of Clostridium coccoides was detected in the caecum, while a higher abundance of the Enterococcus genus in the jejunum and caecum after PR intervention.…”

“…TCM has the characteristics of abundant resources, low cost, and few side effects, and it plays an important role in the Chinese medical system. Some studies have shown that herbal medicines have good efficacy against CDI [ 22 ]. The combination of TCM and antibiotics can prevent recurrent infections caused by antibiotic treatment [ 23 ].…”
