Traditional Chinese Medicine Tongxinluo Improves Cardiac Function of Rats with Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: The study aimed at testing the hypothesis that tongxinluo capsule might exert its cardioprotective effect by preventing ventricular remodeling and improving coronary microvascular function in a rat model of doxorubicin-induced dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Rats that survived DCM induction were randomly divided into three groups to be given 1.5 g·kg−1·day−1 (TXL-H, n = 9) or 0.15 g·kg−1·day−1 (TXL-L, n = 10) of tongxinluo, or normal saline at the same volume (DCM-C, n = 10) intragastrically. Age matched normal … Show more

“…In the study, the rats were treated with a cumulative dose of DOX, seven times (1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg), every week, to approach the schedule of the clinical conditions ( 17 ). No observed general toxic effect was at 1 mg/kg and general toxic effect without mortality was found at 2 mg/kg ( 49 , 57 ). However, a similar schedule using even 0.8 mg DOX/kg results in adverse cardiac effects at the histological, ultrastructural, and biochemical levels ( 15 ).…”

“…Chińscy autorzy, Shen i wsp. [1], przeprowadzili badanie na modelu zwierzęcym DCM indukowanej doksorubicyną w celu oceny potencjalnego wpływu kardioprotekcyjnego TXL. Badanie odbyło się zgodnie z obowiązującymi międzynarodowymi regulacjami dotyczącymi etyki badań doświadczalnych nad zwierzętami.…”

“…As one of the most popular models of complementary and alternative medicine in China, TCM is gradually accepted by non-Chinese people due to its apparent e cacy, abundant resources, and low toxicity, and is increasingly used in western countries [6,7]. In the clinical treatment of DCM, there are many proprietary Chinese medicines and TCM injections alone or as an adjuvant to conventional chemotherapy [8][9][10][11].…”
