“…Listing of the term caring by many participants and the salience of this term among all subgroups analyzed suggest that compassionate care is of primary importance to patients and patients' families, regardless of patients' clinical outcomes. The importance of caring is further supported by the results of Riley et al, 38 who noted that compassion and concern were important themes identified by patients' family members, nurses, and physicians during focus-group discussions about patient-centered ICUs. The overall similarity in responses from patients and from family members is not surprising.…”
