“…Moutan Cortex (MC), as the main medicinal part, is the dry root bark of the peony, and is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine [2]. MC was first published in the Shennong's Herbal Classic of Materia Medica [3] and performs a variety of medicinal functions, such as anti-inflammatory [4], antioxidant [5], anti-bacterial, anti-cancer [6], and anti-diabetes [7]. There are many components isolated from MC, mainly including phenols and phenolic glycosides, monoterpenes, and their glycosides, sterols, flavonoids, coumarins, polysaccharides, and organic acids, etc.…”

“…In addition, there have been various applications for the screening of bioactive compounds of MC [47,48], the evaluation of quality markers [49], the chemical fingerprinting of paeonol [45], and the quantitative determination of herbal medicines [50]. However, due to the fact that the identified compounds were prepared by means of an organic solvent in these reports, there were derivatives, geometric isomers, and more than a hundred compounds [5]. This is not conducive to the qualitative analysis of the bioactive components.…”

“…[15] MC possesses a range of pharmacological activities, including anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, and improvement in diabetes mellitus, among others. [15][16][17][18][19][20] However, MC is less used in agriculture, especially for fungicidal activity. Interestingly, our group discovered in a previous study that MC ethanol extract exhibited fungicidal activity against a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi, especially against R. solani, with 100 % inhibitory activity at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL.…”

“…Moutan cortex (MC), derived from the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews, has been utilized in China's clinical practice for nearly 2000 years [15] . MC possesses a range of pharmacological activities, including anticoagulant, anti–inflammatory, anti–tumour, and improvement in diabetes mellitus, among others [15–20] . However, MC is less used in agriculture, especially for fungicidal activity.…”

“…We focused on natural plant components to explore new effective drugs 6 and found several monomeric compounds from peony bark, which have significant effects on antidiabetic and antioxidant stress. 7 We examined the effects of these compounds on the GC‐1 cell model treated with high glucose through a drug screen (Figure S4A ), which showed that only paeonol significantly increased SIRT3 expression, especially at the concentration of 10 μM (Figures 2A–D and S4B–C ). In addition, cell proliferation and viability were inhibited at higher concentrations of paeonol (Figure S4D ).…”
