Migration research poses several unique challenges and opportunities. Conducting ethical global health practice, especially when studying migrant mental health, is of particular concern. This article explores seven challenges and lessons learned in our mixed‐methods study conducted to assess the impact of the migration experience on Haitian migrants’ mental health in Santiago, Chile. The primary challenges were recruiting in a highly mobile population, building trust and community participation, overcoming language barriers, safety considerations during the Covid‐19 pandemic, mitigating potential negative impacts of research on the community, providing psychological support, and finding meaningful ways to benefit the community. We propose moving toward a better and more ethical migrant research practice by ensuring language accessibility, hiring community members for the study team, working with local institutions and nongovernmental organizations, and maintaining sustainable connections.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore the impact of family separation and transnational parenthood on Haitian migrant women’s mental health living in Santiago, Chile. Design/methodology/approach Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with Haitian men and women living in Santiago de Chile, and based on an inductive perspective, a thematic analysis was performed. Findings The process of family reunification has been specifically hard in the past years, therefore, almost no one has been able to bring their children to Chile despite having a permanent visa. An important aspect of their testimonies is that they feel guilty about having someone else taking care of their children, even though sometimes they are the ones financially supporting the entire extended family. Originality/value This study’s findings show how family separation, ransnational parenthood, and migration experiences particularly affect Haitian igrant women’s mental health and provides relevant information on its onsequences for their quality-of-life. However, it is surprising that having plans to move out was a protective factor against symptoms of depression.

Introduction: Haitian migrants in Chile face significant challenges in accessing healthcare services due to language barriers. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify the main linguistic barriers and facilitators that impact healthcare access for this population.Methods: A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases, identifying relevant studies published on linguistic barriers and healthcare access for Haitian migrants in Chile. The PRISMA framework was used to guide the selection process, and data were synthesized into key themes.Results: A total of 7 studies were included in the review. The findings showed that limited Spanish proficiency and the lack of trained interpreters were major obstacles to healthcare access, particularly in primary care and mental health services. Several studies highlighted the positive impact of bilingual community health workers and the development of culturally adapted materials in Haitian Creole as effective facilitators.Conclusions: Language barriers remain a critical challenge for Haitian migrants in Chile. Implementing culturally competent training for healthcare professionals and integrating bilingual support services are essential strategies to improve healthcare access for this population. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term impact of these interventions.
