Traffic Measurement on Multiple Drive Lanes with Wireless Ultrasonic Sensors

Abstract: An automated traffic measuring system for use on multiple drive lanes is proposed in this paper. This system, which uses ultrasonic sensors and a lateral scanning method, is suitable for use on real traffic roads. The proposed system can be easily established and maintained in various roadway environments. In addition, the system can be adjusted to measure traffic volumes according to the size and number of drive lanes. This paper describes the results of an experiment that the lateral scanning method can be e… Show more

“…After a careful survey and detailed feasibility analysis on different sensor types above, we choose ultrasonic sensors in this study. Ultrasonic sensors have been widely used in ITS and VANET area applications such as vehicle tracking and classification [ 7 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], obstacle detection and mapmaking [ 26 , 27 ], vacant parking slot detection [ 28 ], smart traffic signaling [ 29 ], ultrasonic ranging and localization [ 30 ], etc. Ultrasonic sensors are a well accepted technology for distance sensing applications, because of the inexpensive and easy-to-adopt nature, and reliable and stable measurement performance within their measuring range.…”

“…The fixed-point observation technique is widely employed in UGS and ITS by installing an inductive loop sensor [7], ultrasonic sensor [8,9], seismic sensor [10] and camera [11]. However, these sensing systems suffer from complicated installation, expensive maintenance costs and high power consumption.…”

“…Four large groups can be made: Counting sensors: these sensors count the vehicles which travel through a determined control section, without distinguishing the lane or the direction. Within WSN applied to traffic control, there are initiatives based on counting sensors, such as those shown in Jeon et al [ 11 ]. Path-ID sensors: they need the installation of a wireless device in the vehicle to establish a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication [ 12 ].…”
